1) Jungle rot, ringworm of the foot, tineas pedis. Anything with names like these can’t be good. Unfortunately, up to 70% of the population may be afflicted by some form of these festering fungal invasions also known as athlete’s foot. Whatever you call it, dealing with the itchy, flaky, burning effects of foot fungus is no walk in the park.

2) Say the words warm and wet, and most guys will instinctively conjure up some pleasant thoughts. Yet these climate conditions also present a breeding ground for athlete’s foot. Walk barefoot through any gym locker room and there’s a good chance you’ll be leaving with more than just added muscle mass. Once those fungi latch onto your feet, they quickly set up house between your toes.

3) Some people can do naked snow-angels on a fungus-riddled steam room floor without any repercussions while others may get infected with a single step into their family bathroom. Truth is, some guys are more prone to athlete’s foot. If you’ve walked away unscathed from numerous high-risk infection sites, chances are you’re no fun to the fungi.

4) If you touch something that has fungi on it, you can spread athlete’s foot to other people even if you don’t get the infection yourself.

5) After you’ve had athlete’s foot, you’re more likely to get it again. So if you’ve yet to catch it, congratulations! And if you want to maintain your fungus-free lifestyle, be sure to keep your feet dry and clean as often as possible, and wear roomy shoes made of materials that allow moisture to escape.

</div

A common thread on various nutrition websites concerns the quality of the food that we eat. One of the more popular issues is the topic of mercury in our fish.

Mercury found in fish is actually known as methylmercury is has been shown to be harmful in developing nervous systems of babies and young children. It has been shown to affect cognitive, motor and sensory functions. As methylmercury builds up in a persons bloodstream the more severe the potential health issues are. The FDA and EPA advises against eating fish that contains high levels of mercury and I personally advice two fish servings per week as it does take the body a good amount of time to push the mercury out of your system.

While mercury is naturally occurring, methlymercury is a result of industrial pollution. As mercury enters our oceans and rivers through rain and snow, it combines with bacteria and a chemical transformation happens that makes the methlymercury toxic. Fish absorb mercury and as the bigger fish eat the smaller fish they accumulate mercury. In 2000 the National Academy of Sciences released a study called Toxicological Effects of Methlymercury and said

Because of the beneficial effects of fish consumption, the long term goal needs to be a reduction in the concentrations of mercury in fish rather than the replacement of fish in the diet by other foods. In the interim, the best method of maintaining fish consumption and minimizing mercury exposure is the consumption of fish known to have lower methylmercury concentrations.

How do I reduce my exposure to mercury?

The best way to reduce mercury exposure is by eating a variety of fish. While the FDA and EPA recommend that women who are or may become pregnant and nursing only consume 2 meals of fish per week, I’m recommending only 1 serving.

What fish is high in mercury?

The fish that contain the highest amount of mercury are…

I’m often asked what the best foods for raising testosterone are. Quite honestly, there’s numerous foods that increase your testosterone levels naturally.

First, let’s look at what testosterone really is.Testosterone is

A cholesterol based chemical

Not created from dietary fat as much as people think

Produced from the acetyl-CoA enzyme that is produced by sugar and burned for calories or through HMG-CoA when in ketosis.

HMG-CoA then is formed into squalene which is the slowest moving process and is also what popular statin drugs slow down further.

Fortunately for us, it’s not dietary fat that leads to heart disease, it’s the body’s own cholesterol making systems that causes the most cholesterol related heart problems.

Here are the best foods for raising testosterone naturally.

Any food that offers certain minerals such as magnesium, zinc and B vitamins that help to form metalloprotein and metalloenzymes which are involved in processes to create cholesterol.

Some of the best foods for increasing natural testosterone are

Garlic

Oysters

Scallops

Broccoli

Kale

Grass Fed Beef

Cabbage

Eggs

Some of the best minerals for raising testosterone include zinc, magnesium, arachodonic acid, B vitamins and D-asaparatic acid. What about green tea? Recent green tea studies show that the EGCG suppresses the aromatase enzyme which converts testosterone to estrogen. Green tea blocks this nasty conversion and stabilizes our hormones. Black tea, while not popular for enhancing hormones can reduce inflammation which can raise your testosterone.

Some other great foods for raising testosterone include

Sweet potatoes:A 2004 study examines how sweet potatoes can effect growth in children. Children who consume more vitamin A, which is found in sweet potatoes in high amounts, experienced increases in testosterone similar to those getting testosterone therapy treatment.

Salmon: This goes back to my comment about zinc above. Salmon is a great source of zinc and essential fatty acids.

Yogurt: Going with what I said about calcium earlier, a 2008 study in the journal of Biological Trace Element Research found subjects who supplemented with higher levels of calcium had higher levels of testosterone then subjects who did not.

Bananas: Containing the bromelain enzyme that enhance natural testosterone production, bananas are also a great source of potassium that increases your natural energy levels.

Almonds (nuts in general): High in essential fatty acids that form the base of cholesterol molecules, macadamia nuts and pine nuts have both been shown to possess abilities to increase testosterone production.

Do you feel tired and sluggish lately? Do you not have enough energy to workout or do something active outdoors? You could be suffering from hypothyroidism or a slow, inactive thyroid that has down regulated various other metabolism signals. Do you have some unexplained weight gain? If so, your slow thyroid could be the cause.

Now before I go further I highly suggest that you get a full thyroid panel blood test as well as examine your reverse T4. Also, are you inactive because your lazy? Do you not want to put down the cookies and eat some whole grains? If you’re not trying to lose weight and if you wouldn’t classify yourself as a decent eater then it isn’t your thyroid, it’s you being lazy.

I’m sorry if that sounds harsh, I just want to prove a point that symptoms of a low thyroid don’t nesscarily mean that you have a medical condition. Women, by nature, will have slower thyroid then men but it doesn’t mean that they need to be medicated. Our society just wants to keep you on more and more pills, which is why our health care system is failing.

Ultimately, you’re responsible for your own health and there are numerous nutrients that play a role in thyroid health or in a lack of thyroid health.

Iodine: Our body needs a healthy dose of iodine to make thyroid hormone, in 2007 it was estimated that at least 30% of the world’s population is low in iodine. Pretty scary right? It’s a big problem partly because we’re often told to a avoid salt since it raises blood pressure. During pregnancy, T4 production doubles which increases our daily requirements of iodine. Even moderate deficiencies in iodine have been shown to lower an infants IQ by as much as 16 points! Aim to get 1,150 mcg daily of iodine either through this iodine supplement or various seaweed greens.

Selenium: A very important mineral for people that have slow thyroids. Our thyroid actually contains more selenium then any other bodily organ. It has been suggested that supplementing with selenium will improve the conversion of T4 to T3. The actual cells of the thyroid needs selenium for proper functioning. People who suffer from Celiacs disease may also have a selenium deficiency.

Zinc: Known as a helpful nutrient for slow thyroids, zinc has been shown to normal free T3 and total T3 levels.

Iron:A deficiency in iron prevents the thyroid from operating properly since it reduces the important thyroid peroxidase enzyme. Anemia goes hand in hand with iron deficiencies.

Vitamin E: Since vitamin E reduces oxidative stress it can combat a slow thyroid. I prefer this brand of Vitamin E.

Vitamin D: Being low vitamin D has been linked to an increased risk of autoimmune thyroid diseases. New science even suggests that vitamin D deficient is more common among people with potential thyroid cancer. Get your vitamin D.

Vitamin B12: Most individuals with a slow thyroid are found to have vitamin B12 decreased levels. A Pakistani study reported that out of 116 hypothyroid patients tested positive for vitamin B12, 40% were low!

Turmeric: This nutrient potentially impacts slow thyroids since it reduces whole body inflammation. Research has also shown that turmeric use reduces the effects of chemicals given to hypothryoid patients.

Rhodiola: This herb support your adrenal glands and can help your body handle stress.

Here’s Jimmy Smith’s slow thyroid plan.

Week 1: Begin by getting your thyroid checked with this reliable blood test.

Week 2: Eliminate all nutrient devoid foods. No cookies, chips or breads. Lower your dairy and keep your pasta to one servings per week. Add in grass fed beef, organic chicken and multiple greens including kelp, seaweed, broccoli and kale.

Aim for 3 workouts this week lasting 30 minutes.

Week 3: Purchase these three supplements

Iodine

Selenium

Zinc

Week 4: How are you doing on your diet? Need a meal plan idea?

Week 5: Increase your workouts by adding an extra 10 minutes per session but do not do any low intensity aerobic cardio.

Week 6: Purchase these vitamins

Vitamin D:take 5,000 IU’s

Vitamin B12

Vitamin E

Week 8: Get your thyroid blood panel redone

Former bodybuilder Dave Palumbo has popularized what has become known as the Palumbo Diet for bodybuilding and burning fat. While primarily used for fitness contests, this diet is a modified ketogenic diet born out of the misunderstanding of carbohydrates.

What is the Palumbo Diet?

In a nutshell the Palumbo diet is based off of a few sound nutritional principles for anyone looking to improve their body composition.

High protein at about 1-1.5 grams per body weight

Moderate fat at about .5 gram per pound of body weight

No direct carb sources except during the cheat meal or those found in vegetables.

The theory is that during a very low carb diet the brain goes into ketosis which is the process by which ketone bodies are produced for brain energy from fats. Since you’re eating plenty of fat you’ll have plenty of energy or that is the theory. The once per week cheat meal on the Palumbo Diet will be enough to increase muscle glycogen stores to keep cortisol low but enhance your mood. I really don’t like these all out cheat meals as they enforce bad habits. You should also get enough fiber into your diet to further increases your feeling of fullness.

A typical example of a Palumbo Diet for a 200 pound man

MEAL #1

5 whole eggs (make sure to buy OMEGA-3 EGGS from the supermarket. They contain virtually NO saturated fat and tons of good OMEGA-3 fats); add another 4 egg whites to this (they don?t need to be the Omega-3 ones; you can use liquid egg whites)

MEAL #2

SHAKE: 50g Whey Protein with 1 tablespoon of All Natural Peanut butter (no sugar)

MEAL #3

“Lean Protein Meal”: 8oz chicken with 1/2-cup cashew nuts (almonds, or walnuts)

MEAL #4

SHAKE: 50g Whey Protein with 1 tablespoons of All Natural Peanut butter (no sugar added)

MEAL #5

“Fatty Protein Meal”: 8oz Salmon, Swordfish, or RED MEAT with a green salad (no tomatoes, carrots, or red peppers) with 1 tablespoon of Olive Oil or Macadamia nut oil and vinegar

MEAL #6

SHAKE: 50g Whey with 1 tablespoon all natural peanut butter or 4 whole (Omega-3) eggs and 4 extra whites

Palumbo Diet Notes

-It takes 3-4 days to get into strong ketosis so you may feel terrible while your body gets rid of stored carbohydrates.

-Aim to consume 9 grams of essential fatty acids per day.

-You should have one green salad with olive oil per day.

-Dave is a big fan of macadamia nut oil as it is a healthy omega-6 fatty acid

Once fat loss slows down you should increase the use of cardio and fat burners.

-Don’t use MCT’s when dieting.

-Artificial sweeteners are ok.

Try to keep your workout volume slightly lower and use low intensity cardio.

So what do I think about the Palumbo Diet?

I’ve written before on the benefits of ketogenic diets for weight loss so I’m a general fan of the Palumbo Diet. I hate how your carbohydrates are severely limited though. In the fitness and performance world we focus way too much on how carbohydrates are the enemy and how we have to keep insulin low. While I agree that for general weight loss we should aim at keeping our insulin levels low ,we can get away with small amounts of carbohydrates around our workout time. I don’t advise these huge carbohydrates dumps but for daily life it’s not possible for us live an energetic life with our family and at work when we’re doing multiple cardio sessions and taking in very little carbohydrates. This is a good diet for the last 1-2 weeks before a bodybuilding show or photo shoot. Remember, if you severely limit your carbohydrate intake like the Palumbo diet recommends then your ability to carb up will be inhibited.

Hammer Your Muscles

Your best bet for maximizing strength is to use free-weight exercises over machines. But if overloading your muscles for hypertrophy is what you’re after, give Hammer Strength machines a closer look. Scientists at Western Kentucky University (Bowling Green) found that subjects’ one-rep maxes were significantly greater on the Hammer Strength machines compared to free weights. This suggests machines are better for days when you want to use as much weight as possible. But experts warn against using Hammer Strength as a marker for how much you can lift: Just because you can bench-press 400 pounds on the machine doesn’t mean you can bench that much with free weights.

If your upper pecs are lagging and you’re benching away on the standard 45-degree incline bench, try dropping it to 15–30 degrees. Research suggests that moves performed at 45 degrees place too much stress on the shoulders to adequately overload the upper pecs.

Graphic Muscle

The squat is the king of all leg exercises. Typically we recommend using a shoulder-width stance to target all four quadriceps muscles, as well as the hams and glutes.

But with squats, the width of your stance alters the focus placed on certain muscles such as the vastus medialis (teardrop muscle on the inner quads), vastus lateralis (outer quads) or glutes.

This graph shows the percent increase in muscle activity of these muscles

Tip-Off : To focus on building more outer thigh sweep or building up your glutes, go with the double shoulder-width stance. To build up the teardrop muscle, choose a hip-width stance.

A Better Angle

Building Muscle Definition
Most of us want to look healthy and a crucial element of this appearance is a muscular and well defined body. Many of us fail to understand that building muscle tone is not really tough, it only requires a little effort. All that you need are the correct work outs to stimulate the cardiovascular system supplemented by proper diet and plenty of rest. Not only will this enhance the overall appearance of your muscles but also supply you with a lot of energy and self-confidence. Just like any other technique of training, you must be knowledgeable about what you should do and what you shouldn’t do however, once you have determined a sensible system, you will see results.

The prerequisite of building muscle definition is to train regularly and efficiently. Without physical activity, muscles don’t get a workout and there is no chance of building muscle tone. If you want to build this tone quickly, the only way to do so is to go to the gym regularly and weight train. Weights increase your overall muscle tone quickly and have the added advantage that you can focus on particular parts of the body. Moreover, you will need to regularly undertake activities like running, walking briskly, biking or playing a sport like basketball.

The routine of exercise that you follow is very significant and, if you are short on time, you should try and exercise two groups of muscles concurrently. You should also try and alternate these different muscle groups on a regular basis so that each group gets an appropriate workout. If you are utilizing the gym, remember that heavy weights are only essential if you want to add muscle mass. If you just want to tone your muscles, then lifting lighter weights at an increased frequency will be most beneficial.

The importance of proper diet and rest can’t be stressed enough. Concentrate on your protein intake and decrease the fatty foods that you consume by eating white protein or lean meat. Supplement your protein intake with healthy protein drinks particularly after a workout. Be sure to drink lots of water and unsweetened fruit juice. Also don’t forget to get plenty of rest as the body must recover or else you will feel constantly tired.

Recently it has come to light that Whole Foods is in bed with corn GIANT Monsanto. So should you really buy organic food?

In case you don’t know how Monsanto is here’s a brief primer.

Monsanto controls all the large and small farms in the U.S. There’s only a handful of small farms left that they don’t control and Monsanto will have them under their thumb in a few months.

Monsanto forces you to use corn and soy feed for the animals and for your crops. Hence why we’re all sick these day.

Monsanto will sue you for not using corn or soy, yes they really are evil.

Everyone that has a high position in Monsanto generally moves onto a high government position. This is very easily provable.

I’m considering investing in Monsanto, seriously. I’m not a fan of them but they are a recession or downturn proof business that isn’t going anywhere and have a very stable stock.

Now before you right me off as some uneducated blogger, please check yourself. I advocate a grass fed, green tea, high veggies and fruits lifestyle. I believe that food is medicine.

I also don’t believe the hype. Whole Foods has never been this champion of the people like they claim.

Should you buy organic food?

Not trying to say I told you so but…with this Whole Food and Monsanto GMO stuff. A) Whole Food’s has had a vegan agenda for YEARS, hence why they try to shove the soy and gluten dominant satan down your throats in all their “chicken free” meats. B)I’ve said for years that buying organic was a rip off. 90% of all pesticides are water souble…which means….they more then likely are washed with…water. And to boot, organic farms share the same soil and are right next to non organic farms…there’s this little factor called WIND. Eat less food, some starches, grass fed meat, wild caught fish, some fat and call it a day. Green tea really is super solider formula.

The Science of Stank

● Body odor is a combination of sweat and bacteria. Sweat is actually odorless; it’s the bacteria that live on body sweat that create the putrid scent.

There are Two Types of Sweat

● …eccrine and apocrine. Eccrine lowers body temperature and is produced all over the body. It doesn’t smell. Apocrine is made up of fats and proteins, and is produced only in places such as the armpits, groin and feet. On its own, it doesn’t smell. But when bacteria get a hold of it, the stank party is soon in full effect.

Reasons We Reek

● Poor hygiene. The primary reason for smelling like sh*# is because we don’t bathe enough. It’s as simple as that.

● Spicy food. Eat this and it’s not just your breath that’ll stink. Spicy foods such as cumin, curry, garlic and onion produce bad-smelling, sulfur-containing gases that can cause body odor up to 24 hours later.

● Sweating. Some people just sweat a lot, and in many cases they suffer the wrath of reek.

● Excess stress. When under significant stress, the body’s natural fight-or-flight response takes over and increases sweating to prevent the body from overheating.

● Failure to dry. You don’t have to be a fat bastard for moisture to get trapped in the folds of your skin after a shower. Any crevice that’s not thoroughly dried can become a breeding area for fungi and bacteria, especially in places with no access to air.

● Family funk. One of the biggest causes of body odor is genetics. Unfortunately, mom or dad may have passed on a disease that causes overactive sweat glands. Others inherit a natural body odor that smells like a cow pasture.

● Just like fingerprints or DNA, individual odor types are genetically determined odors of each person, containing volatile organic compounds that make your scent unique.

● According to a 2006 anthropological study performed in the Czech Republic, meat-eaters outrank their vegetarian counterparts.

Gender Fetor:Onion vs. Cheese

● Studies reveal that women’s body odor contains high levels of sulphur compound, which when combined with bacteria feeding on sweat produces the smell of onion. Men’s sweat, on the other hand, was found to contain high levels of fatty acid that when mixed with bacteria smells like cheese.

Celebrity Stench

● According to reports, Elvis wasn’t a fan of regular bathing. To maintain that minimumbathing lifestyle, he took Nullo deodorant tablets daily. Apparently, they didn’t work. …

Celebrity Matthew McConaughey

● …revealed in 2008 that he never uses deodorant. The following day, he received a year’s supply of Axe deodorant body spray from Unilever,
along with a message suggesting why he might want to start.

Good News, Smelly Dude

● Researchers at the University of California, Berkeley, discovered that a compoundfound in male sweat can cause emotional and physiological changes in women. One such finding shows that men’s underarm odor activates certain brain areas, improving a woman’s mood and sexual arousal.

Scent of a Caveman

● According to anthropologist Louis Leakey, body odor might be responsible for early man’s survival. His theory claims that most predators avoided eating humans due to their “repugnant” body odor.

Smell Like an Egyptian

● Along with the pyramids and flush toilets, the ancient Egyptians also discovered deodorants and were the first to promote the concept of applying scents such as cinnamon to the armpits.

Everdry, the First Modern Antiperspirant…

● …was released in 1903. The original formula was so acidic that it regularly ate through clothing.

Today’s Antiperspirants…

● …can also cause considerable damage. That’s because aluminum chloride, the ingredient that blocks glandular openings and prevents sweating, is also responsible for turning the pits on your T-shirts yellow.

Antiperspirants: the Good, the Bad and the Ugly

● If you want to just mask the foul odor emanating from your underarms, deodorant is the way to go. But if you’re giving a presentation at the off ice and find yourself sweating more than a fat kid at a relay race, you’ll want to go with the sweat-blocking benefits of antiperspirant.

Classified as Drugs…

● …by the FDA, antiperspirants affect and/or alter your body’s natural functions.

True or False?

● Can your stink be a sign of bad health? True. If your sweat smells like bleach, it may be a sign of kidney or liver disease, while a nail-polish odor can point to diabetes. Don’t ignore that funky stench.
